Looking Good

Teaching is in some ways like other jobs. For one, it's a steady business; like being a mortician, you can be pretty sure that people are still going to dying, and you can be pretty sure that there are going to be kids and they will need teachers. There will always be a minimum number of teachers needed, depending on the number of kids there are in any school.

When the economy is bad, the same number of teachers are still going to be needed, except that people who might have retired say, this year, are waiting to recoup some of the losses in their IRA's or whatever, so there are fewer jobs open, as there are fewer jobs open in a lot of fields.

Not a great time to be finishing school and start looking for your first job.

K has sent out nearly 50 resumes on paper and has sent in maybe two dozen more in email. Since she has always been the kid who takes a test and comes home and says "I failed" and then gets the A, this is a tense time for her.

Yesterday, she got her first call for an interview. Today she got her second.

YAAAAAAAAAY!!

She's going to one tomorrow and the other on Friday. This tells us that if nothing else, her resume and cover letter look good. It also tells us that she might maybe get a job for September.

Omigod, I am so excited. She cannot sit still; she's up in her room picking out clothes and making sure that her portfolio is PERFECT.

And dear old B-Town, the school system that nurtured her and has been my employer for 32 years, and where both her grandparents taught, and which has an opening in her field? Hasn't called yet. I hope by the time they do she's taken a job elsewhere. They're all doofi. (Plural of doofus, according to my nephew.)

I'm crossing fingers, toes, whatever.

  1. Aside from her own excellent performance, the girl has "yichus." Some of those jacki may be afraid she knows where the bodies are buried.
