Paging Senator McCarthy

I am sick and tired of self-righteous assholes telling me that I am not a "real" American. I am as real as it gets, as real as you, although we may be different in many ways. Liberals are certainly "real", they just disagree with you, morons. I would like to see one of these people tell me face to face exactly why I am less "real" an American than they think they are. Because I had immigrant grandparents? (Everybody had an immigrant somebody.) Because I live on the East Coast? (Look at the census figures. A lot of people live on the East Coast.) Because I'm a liberal? (Haven't we had liberal presidents in the past, too?) Because I'm ... oh. Right. I know what I am. Sooner or later, that's what it comes down to; it always has and it always does. Did I say paging Senator McCarthy? Maybe we should be paging Heinrich Himmler instead.

  1. Yes, I know. Somewhere in there, despite the fact that we -- all of us -- really know better, someone starts up with "you disagree with me, so you're not a real American." It stinks.

That's part of why I wish it were all over. Four years ago, one of my favorite diarists wrote that she was happy that Mr. Dubya had won again, and she stopped writing forever. It's a darned shame that we can't agree to disagree without hating each other. It's even worse that such an attitude will be the downfall of our country.

And I would say that even if I didn't agree with you.

  2. Oh hey! I like this new comment format where the box pops up right on the entry. I wasn't fond of having to click another link -- call me lazy. ;o)

AMEN, my friend!! I hate the insinuation that I am not a REAL American because I disagree with the war in Iraq and because I don't think Bush has been a very good president. I am the daughter of a serviceperson and the wife of an active duty serviceperson -- you can't get more patriotic than me! People need to realize that our differing views on things is patriotic; America was founded on the ability to disagree without penalty. We are called unAmerican because we want change, and people always fear change.

    *sigh*

  3. I get SO SICK AND TIRED of conservative jackasses talking about "liberal Massachusetts" and "San Francisco values" like they are these totally foreign, utterly anti-American concepts and places. Guess what, jackasses -- America is a big enough, strong enough nation to have all sorts of people and value systems and beliefs co-existing!

And your last couple of sentences there highlight something that has bothered me about both campaigns: that McCain and Obama are all protesting that, oh, no no no, Obama's not an Arab or a Muslim, he's a good Christian man. But tell me what in the world would be wrong with an Arab or Muslim (born in this country) running for President of the United States of America? Colin Powell is by no means a hero in my book (since he's the one who sold the Iraq war to the public), but at least he's a Republican who's willing to talk honestly about his party's disgusting tactic of dividing this country into "real" Americans, and everyone else.
